Can N possesses all the hallmarks of a classic Mediterranean villa. There’s the lush forest surrounds, the mature garden beds full of native trees and shrubs and stunning sea views. The exteriors are typically Blakstad, with whitewashed walls, shady pergolas and plenty of space for outdoor entertaining. While we often focus on the structural elements of Blakstad’s designs, Can N is a perfect opportunity to explore the studio’s expertise in interior design.

Long-time Blakstad team member, architect and interior designer Alfredo Cirelli, was tasked with transforming this beautiful villa from a completed construction project into a true home. “This project was about more than just design,” Cirelli explains. “It was about creating a home that embraced its inhabitants.” The clients were so enamoured with Cirelli and his attitude and style that they surrendered most decisions to his well-attuned eye. “We did everything,” he says. “The furniture of course, but also the linen, the towels and teaspoons. Right down to the Champagne in the fridge and the bouquets of flowers.” Suffice to say, Cirelli and his team went above and beyond to ensure that the moment the clients stepped into their new home, they felt completely at ease.

In harmony with the client’s lifestyle and the essence of Ibiza, Cirelli focused on natural materials, handcrafted objects and earthy textures. His vision was to create spaces that exuded comfort while staying true to the Mediterranean aesthetic. “I feel a great affection for this project because we were able to work in a very organic way,” he says. “The idea is that you enter the house and feel embraced by it.”

Much of the furniture was designed by Blakstad and crafted locally in Ibiza. “It’s truly bespoke,” Cirelli says. “The beds, tables and many of the chairs were made here by our carpenters.” A standout piece is a circular coffee table made out of three slabs of baobab wood. What could not be sourced locally was meticulously selected from European artisans, with a preference for small-scale production and traditional craftsmanship. Textiles come from Lyria, one of Italy’s most innovative textile designers and manufacturers, while towels and bathroom linen are from Mikmax Barcelona, and other elements are from Villevenete.

Craftsmanship is a cornerstone of Blakstad’s ethos and Cirelli incorporated various handmade, artisanal pieces throughout Can N. Curvaceous niche shelving displays stunning ceramics, wall décor features creations from African artisans and the stone flooring in the kitchen and dining areas was salvaged from a 500-year-old home on the brink of demolition.

Designed for family living, the spaces at Can N are as functional as they are beautiful. “It’s not about luxury for the sake of it,” says Cirelli. “It’s about finding treasures, using creativity and making the most of what’s available to create something rich in soul and spirit.” This remarkable Ibiza home is where old meets the new, honouring the island’s architectural heritage with warmth, style and that Alfredo Cirelli touch.
