When it comes to rewarding creativity, Hollywood often steals the spotlight with its glitzy stages, iconic statuettes and glamourous red carpets. The Pritzker prize for architecture is just as important, albeit with a quieter grandeur, and the Booker for literature is suitably bookish. Even though these awards are reserved for those who operate within the international arena and regardless of the fascination and prestige attached to the ceremonies, being recognised for one’s work is a life affirming experience. This year, that honour went to Rolf Blakstad, who received the Llave de Ibiza (the Key to Ibiza).

Now in its fifth year the Llave de Ibiza is administered by the Asociación de Amigos del Arte y la Cultura de Ibiza, established nearly a decade ago with a mission to promote the island’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. Recognising those who transmit the island’s creative spirit, heritage and culture to the wider world, this year’s award went to both Rolf Blakstad, alongside fellow architect Patricia Urquiola, honoured for their remarkable contributions to Ibicenco and Mediterranean architecture.

The jury sees the Blakstad legacy as something far deeper than simply building homes. The firm’s work represents decades of dedication to the island’s traditional architecture, an expertise in restoring ancient homes and evolving traditions into contemporary dwellings. The Blakstad ethos reflects a profound respect not just for Ibiza’s heritage, but also for the artisans who helped shape it. In many ways, Blakstad Design Consultants and Architects serve as stewards of this heritage, passing on the knowledge and craftsmanship of the generations that came before. “I’m just another link in a chain that spans 2,500 years,” Rolf noted in his acceptance speech.

From iconic local projects like Can Baladre and Can Trull to significant international commissions, the firm has ensured that Ibiza’s architectural heritage not only survives but thrives. The Llave de Ibiza symbolises Blakstad’s commitment to preserving the island’s unique identity. In joining an esteemed group of honourees who have contributed to the global recognition of Ibiza’s cultural beauty, Blakstad ensures that the island’s creative culture remains alive, ready to face the future while remaining rooted in its storied past. The Llave de Ibiza is a recognition of that delicate balance, a tribute to an architectural firm that understands that safeguarding heritage is as much about progress as it is about preservation.
