When it comes to rewarding creativity, Hollywood often steals the spotlight with its glitzy stages, iconic statuettes and glamourous red carpets. The Pritzker prize for architecture is just as important, albeit with a quieter grandeur, and the Booker for literature is suitably bookish. Even though these awards are reserved for those who operate within the international arena and regardless of the fascination and prestige attached to the ceremonies, being recognised for one\u2019s work is a life affirming experience. This year, that honour went to Rolf Blakstad<\/strong>, who received the Llave de Ibiza<\/em> (the Key to Ibiza).<\/p>\n

Now in its fifth year the Llave de Ibiza <\/em>is administered by the Asociaci\u00f3n de Amigos del Arte y la Cultura de Ibiza<\/em>, established nearly a decade ago with a mission to promote the island\u2019s rich cultural and artistic heritage. Recognising those who transmit the island\u2019s creative spirit, heritage and culture to the wider world, this year\u2019s award went to both Rolf Blakstad, alongside fellow architect Patricia Urquiola, honoured for their remarkable contributions to Ibicenco and Mediterranean architecture.<\/p>\n

The jury sees the Blakstad legacy as something far deeper than simply building homes. The firm\u2019s work represents decades of dedication to the island\u2019s traditional architecture, an expertise in restoring ancient homes and evolving traditions into contemporary dwellings. The Blakstad ethos reflects a profound respect not just for Ibiza\u2019s heritage, but also for the artisans who helped shape it. In many ways, Blakstad Design Consultants and Architects serve as stewards of this heritage, passing on the knowledge and craftsmanship of the generations that came before. \u00abI\u2019m just another link in a chain that spans 2,500 years,\u201d Rolf noted in his acceptance speech.<\/p>\n
